OUGD602 / PPP / Evaluation

The PPP module has developed my presentation as professional practicioner greatly, it has allowed me to communicate my positioning within the field and put me in great stead for post graduation.

My Brand:

The digital material I use to communicate my practice consists of a blog, website, instagram and a portfolio/cv. The use of social media accounts such as Instagram, Twitter and Tumblr have been identified as efficient tools of connecting with industry professionals and collaborators, adherence to how the brand; me as a practioner, is perceived must be sustained as professional, the social media accounts are not environments for the sharing of personal material.

The need for printed material is void, apart from business cards to use at the end of year show; the use of digital media is the most efficient means of communicating, promoting and documenting my practice.

The curating of material on the blog; www.kieranewalsh.co.uk allows a visitor the ability to see my interest, taste and inspirations as a creative, this communicates a sense of my practice. The mergence of curated material and my own work acts as a tool of promotion, attracting traffic with the sustaining of a visual blog, to my own practice aids in gaining attention.

The use of a consistent handle – kieranewalsh grants continuity and the ability for any interested parties to view different iterations of my digital presence on several platforms. The professional manner of this continuity is reiterated with the email address; mail@kieranewalsh.co.uk.

Design Strategy

The intent of working in the commerce of arts, culture and fashion related industry dictates the need to communicate a ‘taste-level’ – granting a potential employer/collaborator to understand my desired pracice and creative direction as a proffesional. The curation of material would be considerably different if my
practice was, for example branding design, rather the communication of fashion, art and cultural visual matieral.

I believe the communications of my practice are effective in promoting my abilities, specialisms and taste-level as a creative while being presented in a professional, continuous manner.

I believe my investigation and refining of intent as a designer have developed incredibly in the past year. My identification of postgraduate opportunities has created great discussion with peers, tutors and professionals, the subsequent informed opinion grants me confidence in believing my direction into the industry is the right one.

I believe the documenting of my professional practice and the tools to contact employers/collaborators with places me in good stead to successfully achieve professionalism – the existing relationships with several big names within my desired industry reflects, not only my identification of who I am and what I want to be as a creative but my merit to interact professionally - working at DAZED, the offer from TANK and interviews with LAW and MUSHPIT reflect my self initiated involvement and interaction with the professional industry - an attribute of professionalism I am proud of.

OUGD602 / PPP / Digital Portfolio

My PDF portfolio is used to apply internship and career opportunities, as of yet I have been met with response from DAZED and TANK, two platforms I admire and hope to work for in the future - these responses do yield optimism however there is a lot of room for development here. I intend to extend and develop the portfolio post graduation with the imagery taken of final projects.

OUGD602 / PPP / Professional Presence

In order to better my chances when applying for entry-level positions within the arts, culture and fashion – design and direction positions within editorial and advertising, my web presence is to be communicated alongside a portfolio.
My webpage: www.kieranewalsh.co.uk acts as both a blog and portfolio, attracting visit through the blog and the call to action of viewing my portfolio.
Instagram is also a great tool for connecting with the creative industry, I do not conform to the use of Instagram as a visual diary of every takeaway and night out I’ve had but a place for exploratory photography and design
I have acquired the more professional email address of mail@kieranewalsh.co.uk to compliment the website and the ongoing handle ‘kieranewalsh’. The use of the ‘e’ for Edward in-between Kieran and Walsh grants search engine optimization
I am also partaking in a social media blackout to a certain extent, all social media accounts are private and do not include a profile picture – replaced with a full black. I believe this to be beneficial to my professional practice as to stay formal and separate the private and work lives.

OUGD602 / PPP / The Postgraduate Plan

The Postgraduate Plan:

Informed by my own investigation into the inequality faced by Northern based students when entering the creative industries here
After much deliberation, the decision between education and industry has concluded with Industry. Although I would thoroughly enjoy post graduate study, the industry professionals and tutors I have asked agree that postgrad study is viable for a future teacher or a self indulgence to a certain extent if I can be afforded – I am neither of the two therefore the decision to go straight into industry seems logical.

Location has been of great debate this year, the Intern article allowed me to conclude through research that London cannot be beaten in relation to amount of job opportunities at the moment alongside the greater creative scene. Discovering this through research and experiencing London while at DAZED leaves me to conclude Industry and South are the most logical answer to North or South, Education or Industry.

OUGD602 / PPP / Professional Practices

York Launch

My professional practice for York St John University is an example of external engagement with an institution – the project was especially relevant to position statement.

York ISBN

The project required the need for commercial attributes such as ISBN and the issuing of copyright.

Intern Kill Fee

An experience as a professional practitioner,  the relationship with Intern Magazine was an example of a kill fee – a payment in order to cease and credit work up to the point

Interviewing LAW, MUSHPIT

Interviewing style press mags LAW and MUSHPIT exemplifies my external engagement with relevant businesses. Both magazine reflect the work I intend to do post graduation.

Tank Magazine

A recent interview with TANK magazine reflects my enthusiasm for style orientated printed publications. Responding to a call for interns, I sent a PDF portfolio of recent work alongside a covering letter, my enquiry was met with a response and an interview was organized. Arriving on time (ofcourse) the interview was an informal discussion about my own practice, my intent as a designer as well as TANK’s working environment and the projects that partake in on a daily basis.
The interview itself was an opportunity to network with my desired industry as well as posing the question of post graduate study or work to the creative director to benefit my own decision making – she believed a post graduate study would be of benefit if I was to be a teacher or can afford the luxury. Reiterating several opinions I had previously received, this advice concluded to more productive than the interview.

Although I was offered the placement at TANK Magazine, the offer of 6 weeks unpaid with expenses echoes a discussion I made in the article for Intern Magazine, as a northern student I am disadvantaged in regards to entering the creative industry’s capital and the ability to intern within the city without it being incredibly expensive.

---
Ficciones Typografika is well renowned platform, with a great social media following, the platform explores typographic exploration in a public space and digitally.
The attraction for creatives to participate with the project may derive from interest in conceptual practice alongside the sufficient professional publicity, whatever the intent for submission, the project is one of love – it is not run for profit.
My intent in participating in the project derived from the ability to showcase results from my creative exploration, there are little platforms that promote self-initiated experiments. The sufficient publicity and pride as a result of being accepted was also a pleasure.
Without a brief in it’s traditional sense, the platform asked for typographic experiments, the result of unorthodox, concept driven practice.
The aesthetic within my submission ‘FUN FUN FUN’ derived from exactly that, the practice of enjoying the ability to explore new typographic forms that may not be freely available in a commercial environment.
The visual language found within the submission was then, not an immediate derivation from the traditional idea of fun but a more personal practice of art – expressing emotion through the visual, in this case, 2D image.
The technical abilities and explored through practice I developed in this piece can be seen as a reward, allowing myself to learn while experimenting developed my skills on Adobe program, Photoshop.

To have my submission accepted was brilliant of course, be it to put on a C.V, add to my digital presence or even use it as an excuse to talk to other contributors – why would I have not submitted?!
