1. What skills
have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you
have applied them?
Communication - I
have began talking to other design related professionals, this is the first
time I have done this, It is only a start and does need improving dramatically
beginning 2nd year.
Reflection – On
my practice and who I am as a designer. I have identified my manifesto towards
design; this helped me greatly and has actually been used as a direction in my
speaking from experience brief. This will only help more as I develop
reflecting on my own practice.
2. What approaches to/methods of design production have
you developed and how have they informed your design development process?
Starting
the course I was set on Modernist graphic design principles as the truth, I
didn’t question them and was set on creating reflections of my favorite
designers work such as Antonio Carusone and Vignelli.
It has
been a conscious decision and my criticisms of the limitations and similarity
of Modernist work that has almost repelled me into a focus of experimentation,
technology and expression.
Moving
forward, I would like to take my time on the course to experiment greatly with
materials, techniques and processes. I want to make this a key focus of me as a
designer.
3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how
have/will you capitalise on these?
My connection between PPP and design practice has been
incredibly strong. Without PPP I would have struggled on the speaking from
experience. Reflecting on who I am and what I believe in has been brilliant and
I only hop to improve to direct my work even more.
Identifying my own change in taste has been essential as
I had began becoming disheartened with what I was creating. I had brought this
topic up in my first tutorial with Simon, I responded to his advice and began
broadening my range of inspiration; this has been a big part of my work this
year.
4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how
will you address these in the future?
I do need to develop my skills in communicating with
other professionals; this can only be a good thing and I believe I will enjoy
being more involved in the local design community. Opportunities will arrive as
well as meeting new friends.
I need to become more involved with other design related
events, such as art galleries. The more people I meet and events I become
involved in will result in more opportunities.
5. Identify five things that you will do differently
next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?
Blogging - This has been a new revelation to
me this year, as I am sure it has to the majority of the course. I have
struggled blogging every day and I believe it has affected my submissions. I
need to indeed start recording my practice daily, this will relieve the
pressure I have experienced close to deadlines.
Experimentation - This has been a key focus
for me, I have lacked in experimentation this year due the strict nature and
mandatory requirements of some briefs. Next year I intend to stretch the
limitations of set briefs to allow my own development as a designer.
Experimenting in my own time is a way around this.
Creating Contacts - Talking to design
professionals, design students, artists. Basically anyone that will enhance my
contact list, anyone that may be able to help me or vice versa. This is important
for my own development and future in the industry.
Personal Projects - Working in my own time
without deadlines and mandatory requirements can only be a good thing. This
will be the opportunity I need to develop as well create contacts. Focusing on
my own interests will make the work enjoyable.
Self driven design – I have started to do this recently,
design how I want to design, do what I want to do, previously I have been stuck
in a direction given to me by focusing on other designers manifesto’s. This had
taken the expression out of my own work and it seemed I had become a soulless
modernist. Now I have noticed this, I don’t think it will be possible to go
back into such a predicament.
